Sincrotrone
Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste is a multidisciplinary international laboratory of excellence, specialized in generating high quality synchrotron and free-electron laser light and applying it in materials science.
The main assets of the research centre are two advanced light sources, the electron storage ring Elettra and the free-electron laser (FEL) FERMI, continuously (H24) operated supplying light of the selected "colour" and quality to more than 30 experimental stations. These facilities enable the international community of researchers from academy and industry to characterize material properties and functions with sensitivity down to molecular and atomic levels, to pattern and nanofabricate new structures and devices, and to develop new processes.
Lightsources and Laboratories
Sincrotrone operate two light sources, the third-generation electron storage ring Elettra and the fourth-generation, free-electron laser (FEL) FERMI@Elettra, together with a number of support laboratories. The beamlines supply radiation to more than 30 experimental stations, enabling an international community of researchers from academy and industry to characterize material properties and functions with sensitivity down to molecular and atomic levels, pattern and nanofabricate new structures and devices, and develop new processes.
Sincrotrone Trieste has set up several laboratories backing the scientific activity of the Elettra and Fermi beamlines. Both conventional techniques and scientific computing tools are accessible, with the purpose of helping users in conducting their research. The techniques offered in the laboratories are complementary to those available at the beamlines, extending the capabilities of our laboratory.
Industrial applications
The Technological Offering
Synchrotron light has unique characteristics of intensity and coherence that can reveal otherwise inaccessible details of materials, simplify their manipulation and provide information in multiple fields of study including electronics, environmental sciences, materials engineering, medicine, and micro and nanotechnologies. The light is generated by electron accelerators, carried through micrometrically collimated beams selected according to their wavelengths, and transmitted through a beamline to the utilisation and measurement stations.
ILO - Industrial Liaison Office
Elettra Laboratory, managed by Sincrotrone Trieste, is a multidisciplinary international centre of excellence specialized in the production of synchrotron light and its application to the study of matter in various physical states: solid, liquid and gas. Over time, this accumulated experience has created and consolidated an exceptional body of skills and technical expertise, whose benefits Elettra offers in support of industry R&D activities.
The Industrial Liaison Office has been set up to manage Technology Transfer and to promote the use of Laboratory facilities in applied research and for industrial applications.
The ILO Technology Transfer activities are the following:
- Industrial Usage of Synchrotron Light: proprietary beamtime; analytical and metrological measurements; problem solving activities;
- Product and Software Development: new devices and software internally developed are provided to the market; i.e. accelerator components, scientific instrumentation, customized software, etc.
- R&D Projects: leading to industrial products and process co-development;
- Spin Off Set-up: starting from scientific results or new technologies developed at Elettra;
- Advanced Training: for external industrial users.
The ILO supports and coordinates all Laboratory activities involved in industrial applications in different fields, such as:
- Analytical and metrological services on the micro-nanoscale for chemical-physical and electronic structure of materials and devices;
- Photolithographic fabrication of microelectronic, optoelectronic, micromechanic and microfluidic devices;
- Design and sale of highly advanced scientific instrumentation;
- Research and development of technologies and products in co-operation with industrial partners.
Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. Industrial Liaison Office supplies advanced instrumentation to other Synchrotron Facilities and Research Laboratories and provides products and services to private companies operating in different fields: mechanics, optics, pharmaceutical, microelectronics, energy, chemistry, agri-foodstuffs etc.
